Samsung establishes Wolfson as a primary audio partner for GALAXY range of smartphones and tablets

Samsung has signed a multi-year contract with Wolfson Microelectronics as a “primary audio partner” for GALAXY range of smartphones and tablets. The agreement is understood to run for a minimum of three years and cover “intellectual property” as well as component supply. Wolfson Microelectronics is a multinational microelectronics and fabless semiconductor company. It specialises in signal processing and mixed-signal chips for the consumer electronics market. Wolfson provides some of the best audio components for mobile devices and there is a massive audible difference from devices with a Wolfson processor.

Samsung has previously used Wolfson’s audio solutions in their Galaxy S, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II and Galaxy Note 10.1 devices. However, after using Wolfson’s audio chip in the Galaxy S, Samsung decided to go with Yamaha for their Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note smartphones but returned to Wolfson for the Galaxy S III. Samsung’s latest flagship device, the Galaxy S4 (Exynos 5 Octa), uses a very high specs Wolfson WM5102 audio chipset for unequaled audio fidelity.

Mike Hickey, CEO of Wolfson, said:

“This is a significant milestone for Wolfson, and we are delighted to be making this announcement. Having worked closely with Samsung over recent years on their GALAXY range of tablets and smartphones, this agreement is a testament to our strong IP portfolio and our growing partnership, and we very much look forward to working closely together to continue to deliver exceptional audio in Samsung’s smartphones and tablets.”
